Gratitude Changes Everything

November is a time to pause and reflect on what we’re grateful for. But for families navigating the challenging road of dyslexia, gratitude can feel complicated.

It’s not always about test scores or report cards. Instead, it might be gratitude for a tutor who truly understands your child, a teacher who takes the time to listen, or a child who keeps trying despite another frustrating day.

Through it all, remember to celebrate every win and to show yourself grace. Your advocacy, love, persistence, and courage are making a difference.

So to every parent, grandparent, sibling, teacher, and tutor who supports a dyslexic child—thank you.

Susan Barton loves hearing from graduates of the Barton Reading & Spelling System who are thriving as adults. Here’s Jordan’s uplifting story:

Throughout much of his childhood and adolescence, Jordan bore a silent burden that few around him noticed. Reading even simple three-letter words felt like climbing a mountain. As classmates zipped through homework and read aloud with ease, Jordan’s world was filled with anxiety, confusion, and a growing sense of inadequacy.

“Growing up, school was very difficult because I couldn't read,” he recalls. “And everything you do in school is reading.”

Jordan's mother tried computer-based programs like Hooked on Phonics, and he was even placed in special education classes. But nothing truly helped.

That changed when his aunt recommended the Barton Reading & Spelling System. With the help of two dedicated tutors — Certified Barton Tutor Laurie Butler and Susan Barton herself — Jordan finally began to make progress. As his reading improved, his confidence blossomed. He recalls being able to read a paragraph aloud in class with ease — a moment that Jordan once felt was impossible.

Jordan’s next major milestone was earning a perfect score on the reading portion of his GED exam.

“I was so excited and happy,” he recalls, “because for the first time in my life, I got a 100% on something I could never do before.”

Today, Jordan enjoys reading books, spending time with his family, and caring for his Rottweiler, Geri.

Watch Jordan share his uplifting story in this 7-minute video.

Happy Birthday to AJ Pritchard, born on November 5. AJ is best known for lighting up the stage on the U.K.’s Strictly Come Dancing. But behind the glitter and grace lies a story shaped by perseverance—and dyslexia.

Growing up, reading and spelling never came easily. School was often frustrating, and AJ felt misunderstood. But while written words were a struggle, movement was his strength. Dance became his language—where he felt confident, creative, and free.

Over the years, AJ has spoken candidly about how dyslexia shapes the way he learns, thinks, and creates. His journey reminds us that a different way of thinking isn’t a disadvantage — it’s often a hidden strength.

As an ambassador for the British Dyslexia Association, AJ encourages young people to embrace their differences and follow their passions. His message is clear: dyslexia doesn’t hold you back. It opens doors to new ways of seeing the world and solving problems—and those paths can lead to remarkable success.

Scholarship awards vary, based on the level of disability and the district in which you live.

We’re excited to share that the Barton Reading & Spelling System is now available to Indiana families through the Indiana Education Scholarship Account (INESA) program on ClassWallet Marketplace.

The INESA program provides scholarship funds to K-12 students with disabilities.

This scholarship allows families to purchase educational services and tools that meet their child’s specific learning needs. Eligible students with a disability may receive up to $20,000, while siblings may qualify for up to $8,000.

That funding can now be used to purchase the Barton System directly through the ClassWallet Marketplace.
