[What is Dyslexia]

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is no longer a catch-all term. As a result of 15 years of research, we now have four excellent definitions of dyslexia: a simplified version, the political version, the National Institutes of Health's research-based definition, and the revised definition from the International Dyslexia Association.

This page also discusses the cause of dyslexia, and the primary deficit (phonemic awareness) that makes learning to read and spell so difficult.

[Symptoms]

Symptoms of Dyslexia

Symptoms of dyslexia are as varied as snowflakes. No two people have every single symptom. But most have a constellation of these symptoms; some mildly, some severely. And many people are surprised to learn that dyslexia affects more than your ability to read, write and spell.

This page also discusses warning signs in preschool-aged children.

People with dyslexia usually have significant strengths in areas controlled by the brain's right hemisphere. These gifts need to be recognized, praised and encouraged.

[What We Now Know]

What We Now Know

In the early 1980's, the United States Congress mandated the National Institutes of Health to research learning disabilities and answer seven specific questions. After conducting longitudinal research on over 5,000 children for 14 years, plus numerous studies on genetics, interventions, and causes, we finally have replicable, irrefutable research-based information on dyslexia.

This page shares the research results released by the National Institutes of Health from 1994 to the present.

[Testing for Dyslexia]

Testing

If you suspect you or your child might have dyslexia, here's the information you need to get an informal screening or a formal diagnosis.

[How To Teach]

Teaching That Works

People with dyslexia can be taught how to read, write, and spell fluently but they need to be taught differently than is currently done in most schools.

Orton-Gillingham-based multisensory methods have proven to be effective techniques for dyslexic children and adults. This page shares what is taught in an Orton-Gillingham-based system, and how it is taught. It also lists the most well-known O-G systems, along with contact information.

While your child is building his/her basic skills, classroom modifications and technology accommodations can prove invaluable. Even if your child does not qualify for Special Education, he/she may be eligible for these classroom modifications through a 504 plan. Technology tools can also make life much easier for dyslexic children.

[Myths]

Persistent Myths

In 1994, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) released the results of their 15 years of longitudinal studies and specific research projects. These results have been independently replicated and are so robust as to be considered irrefutable by the scientific community.

Yet most people are unaware of these results. So as a parent or advocate, you will encounter the following myths frequently.
